End state oppression in Turkey now!

1. Along with many in the international community, we call for an immediate and thorough investigation of the police brutality against peaceful protestors.  Those who have harmed citizens exercising their democratic right to demonstrate in a non-violent way must be held accountable.

2. Along with the international organizations concerned about availability of information, we also call all parties to ensure that freedom of the press and media in all forms are protected.  When events are unfolding, a democracy stands strong when it allows all views to be heard in the press and in social media.

3. We call on the elected government of Turkey to continually ensure that the founding principles of the Turkish Republic and basic universal democratic rights of citizens are safeguarded, guaranteeing the rights of citizens to hold government accountable for its actions.

4. We urge the government to make further efforts to unite the people of Turkey of all political persuasions, and  consistently play a compromising role to avoid future such conflicts.

ATAA’S MESSAGE ABOUT THE CURRENT SITUATION IN TURKEY

We are reaching out to you about the current situation in Turkey to share with you our efforts and ask for your help in voicing the concerns of the Turkish-American community.  We are continuing to closely monitor events, which are developing rapidly and now reach beyond the initial issue of Gezi Park. Our thanks to those who have shared their thoughts and who are trying to show support for democracy in Turkey in various ways, from email campaigns to peaceful marches.  These are difficult times, and we are all trying to find effective ways to bring strength to our friends and our democracy in Turkey.  In terms of ATAA’s efforts, we will be speaking with various parties this week, including Turkish government officials and representatives of various Turkish and international organizations.  We will convey the strong message and principles you see below.  Our hope is that by reaching out to those who have the ability to impact the current situation, we can help bring a peaceful resolution that strengthens the voice of democracy in Turkey. Protestations en Turquie

Les événements actuels de protestation en Turquie témoignent des aspirations des citoyens au renforcement  du pluralisme démocratique, à l’élargissement des libertés civiques, à une meilleure protection du patrimoine historique et écologique, et à un mode de vie urbain plus adapté aux exigences de la société d’information du 21ème siècle.
Nous regrettons le manque de dialogue entre le gouvernement et les protestataires, et déplorons vivement le recours à la violence par les forces de sécurité.
Nous sommes persuadés que la Turquie, en s’appuyant sur le dynamisme de son économie et la richesse de son capital humain,  dépassera cette crise, grâce notamment à un large compromis social en faveur d’une nouvelle Constitution, et par l’accélération des réformes en vue d’adhésion à l’Union européenne.

RESISTANCE FOR HONOR
This peaceful event began with “the environmental sensitivity and protection”, than upon the police, personal and/or hierarchical, which we could not know, suddenly flared up with the harsh attitude and disproportionate force, e.g. gas, baton, rubber bullet… Thereafter, the intention has exceeded !.
So far, the YOUTH, even not went to vote for polling, made it « HONOR » issue. The government hopefully is withdrawing the police.
In the meantime, the Prime Minister RTE travelled abroad, still in his speeches, he gives the impression that he has been misinformed, and his arrogant words continue to provoke the YOUTH.
Events may last or not, as there is no driving force behind other than HONOR. So, time gives the answer.

ONUR İÇİN DİRENİŞ
“Çevre hassasiyeti ve koruma” ile başlayan olaylar, Polisin kişisel ve/veya hiyerarşik, bilemeyeceğimiz tutumu ile aniden alevlendi, orantısız ve hoyratça güç (örneğin biber gazı, cop, plastik mermi…) kullanmaya başladı. Maksadını aştı !.
Bugüne kadar, oy vermeye bile gitmeyen kesim, yani GENÇLER bunu “ONUR” meselesi yaptılar.
Hükümet, polisi geri çekmeye başladı. Fakat yurt-dışında seyahatte olan Başbakan RTE, hâlâ yaptığı konuşmalarda, yanlış bilgilendirildiği havasını veriyor ve arogan kelimelerle tahrike devam ediyor.
Olaylar sürebilir de sürmeyebilir de. Arkada itici bir güç olmadığı için, bunu zaman gösterir.

End state oppression in Turkey now!

In light of the Turkish government’s oppression of mass peaceful protests and its stifling of media reporting, the GUE/NGL Group condemns Prime Minister Erdogan’s actions and calls for an immediate end to the violence.

GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer, said: « We condemn the state violence of the Turkish Government against the demonstrators. The government must stop its authoritarian style of governing and hold talks with the protesters to avoid an escalation of the violence and further victims. Erdogan’s actions are creating a dangerous division in Turkish society. »

GUE/NGL Vice-President Takis Hadjigeorgiou, Member of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, commented: « We express our solidarity with the demonstrators’ demands for respect of democracy and democratic and human rights and freedoms. We call on the Turkish Government to immediately end this violence against its people. »

According to reports more than 1000 people have been arrested and hundreds injured while several people are said to have died. Turkish anti-riot police are also specifically targeting political parties. 

MEP Hadjigeorgiou continued: « These mass protests highlight the numerous and deep-rooted problems the country is facing. Although positive steps have been made by AKP-led governments to limit the role of the army in political life and on efforts to negotiate a solution to the Kurdish problem, the government projects an increasingly more despotic image, which is of course of great concern first and foremost to the Turkish people. Turkey, as a candidate for EU accession, must promote democracy and reinforce democratic and human rights and freedoms. »

Le chemin de la démocratie passera par Gezi Park

Commentant les manifestations publiques en Turquie et la réaction violente des autorités, l’eurodéputée Verts/ALE, Présidente de la Délégation à la commission parlementaire mixte UE-Turquie, Hélène FLAUTRE a déclaré: 

« Les manifestations massives et pacifiques qui ont eu lieu dernièrement en Turquie, l’usage excessif de la force par la police à leur encontre et le silence des médias classiques turcs sont autant de symptômes d’un profond malaise dans le système politique turc. 

Les manifestations contre la destruction du parc Gezi, exprimaient, au départ, une inquiétude et une frustration croissante vis-à-vis d’une politique de marchandisation excessive de l’espace urbain stambouliote. Cette dernière tend ainsi à ignorer de manière systématique l’avis des riverains ainsi que les conséquences environnementales et sociales des grands projets de réaménagement, toujours plus nombreux. 

Ce mouvement spontané a rapidement pris une ampleur  inédite dans l’histoire de la Turquie. Il bénéficie du large soutien d’un public hétéroclite et constitue par la même une source importante d’encouragement pour la démocratie et le développement durable en Turquie. C’est pourquoi au lieu de traiter les manifestants de criminels, leurs griefs légitimes devraient être pris en compte au plus vite par les autorités turques et le dialogue rétabli. 

Toute réaction disproportionnée de la part de la police à l’encontre de ces manifestants pacifiques doit être sévèrement sanctionnée de même que l’ensemble des personnes arrêtées ces derniers jours dans le cadre de ce mouvement doivent être libérées. 

Il est important que l’esprit de concertation et de compromis soit respecté, en commençant par le niveau local. Dans le cas contraire,  la frustration populaire et la méfiance ne feront que grandir alors que des opportunités historiques telles que le processus de paix, le processus constitutionnel et la relance des négociations avec l’UE seront gâchées. »

Daniel COHN-BENDIT, Co-président du groupe des Verts / ALE au Parlement européen a pour sa part ajouté ajouté:

« Après s’être détournée de la Turquie au cours des dernières années, l’UE doit accorder plus d’attention aux événements dans ce pays candidat à l’adhésion. Si l’UE veut exercer une certaine influence, elle doit dialoguer directement avec le gouvernement turc sur la façon d’aborder les problèmes de ce pays. Ouvrir les négociations d’adhésion avec la Turquie sur les chapitres cruciaux que sont la justice et les droits fondamentaux (chapitres 23 et 24) serait particulièrement pertinent et opportun ».

Les co-présidents du Groupe des Verts/ALE Daniel Cohn-Bendit et Rebecca Harms, ainsi qu’Hélène Flautre, ont invité des représentants du mouvement de protestation turque (y compris à partir de la plate-forme Taksim) la semaine prochaine à Strasbourg, le mardi 11 Juin. Le groupe des Verts/ALE a également demandé à ce que la question soit inscrite à l’ordre du jour de la session plénière de la semaine prochaine.

Ein Warnsignal an die türkische Regierung

Zu den Demonstrationen in Istanbul und anderen Städten der Türkei und der unverhältnismäßig brutalen Reaktion der Ordnungskräfte erklärt Rebecca Harms, Fraktionsvorsitzende der Grünen/EFA im Europäischen Parlament: 

„Offensichtlich hat die Regierung Erdogan den Respekt vor Minderheiten und Meinungsvielfalt verloren. Das zeigte sich auch schon länger in der Inhaftierung von unliebsamen Journalisten, die demokratischen Missständen auf den Grund gehen wollten.

Die Europäische Union muss sich jetzt in der Türkei engagieren. So schnell wie möglich muss über die Kapitel 23 und 24 in den Beitrittsverhandlungen gesprochen werden, die sich mit Justiz und Grundrechten befassen. Auf diesem Weg können wir direkt mit der türkischen Regierung über die Probleme und Defizite im Land sprechen daran arbeiten. » 

Hélène Flautre, Ko-Vorsitzende des Gemischten Parlamentarischen Ausschusses EU-Türkei, erklärt: 

« Die friedlichen Massendemonstrationen in der Türkei, das Schweigen der Mainstream-Medien und der unverhältnismäßige Einsatz von Gewalt durch die türkische Polizei sind Symptome für größere Missstände und Fehlentwicklungen im politischen System der Türkei.

Die ursprünglichen Demonstrationen gegen die Verbauung des Gezi-Parks zeugen von wachsender Besorgnis über einen fortschreitenden Ausverkauf von Istanbuls Landflächen ohne Rücksicht auf ökologische und soziale Auswirkungen zu nehmen und ohne die Bevölkerung zu konsultieren.

Die Demonstrationen haben weite und noch nie dagewesene öffentliche Unterstützung bekommen, was eine wichtige Ermutigung für die Demokratie und für den Umweltschutz in der Türkei bedeutet. Statt die Demonstranten fälschlicherweise als « Plünderer » zu verunglimpfen, sollten nun ihre legitimen Anliegen aufgenommen werden und der Dialog mit der türkischen Regierung rasch wiederhergestellt werden.

Die Gewaltexzesse der Polizei gegenüber den friedlichen Demonstranten müssen eingestellt und alle Festgenommenen unverzüglich freigelassen werden.

Es braucht nun eine Bereitschaft zur Verständigung, beginnend auf lokaler Ebene, sonst wird das Misstrauen weiter wachsen und wichtige historische Chancen wie der Friedensprozess, der Verfassungsprozess und der Neustart der EU-Verhandlungen würden gefährdet. »

Die Ko-Vorsitzende der Grünen/EFA-Fraktion, Rebecca Harms und Dany Cohn-Bendit, und Hélène Flautre, Ko-Vorsitzende des Gemischten Parlamentarischen Ausschusses EU-Türkei, haben Vertreter der türkischen Protestbewegung u.a. von der Plattform vom Taksim nach Straßburg eingeladen. Die Debatte findet am Dienstag, den 11. Juni von 16.30 bis 18:00 Uhr wird im Saal LOW R 3.1 statt.

Statement from ECR Group

Responding to the protests in Turkey, Chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European Parliament, Martin Callanan, said:

 “The ECR Group expresses its sympathy for the injury and loss of life in demonstrations in Turkish cities and shares the concern, also expressed by the Turkish Government, at the disproportionate use of force by the police. We have confidence that the anxieties in relation to municipal development and wider social issues that seem to have sparked the unrest will be addressed sympathetically through <!–?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns
= « urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags » /–>Turkey’s well-established democratic processes.”
