Integration of immigrants in the European Union

Pour ou Contre?!

Many Europeans feel ill-informed about immigration and integration related matters; less than four in ten say that they are well-informed.

There is also a significant lack of awareness of the real extent of immigration from non-EU countries into the EU, with many Europeans overestimating how many immigrants are present in their country.

The overall picture is therefore an ambiguous one: seeing immigration as a problem may not mean hostility against migrants, but rather reflect a perception that governments are not managing the issue of immigrant integration in an adequate way.

A majority of Europeans agree that the integration of immigrants is a necessary investment in the long run for their country. There is also a clear majority who see the EU’s role as important and have a positive view of the actions that could be undertaken by the EU to support the integration of immigrants.

On the one hand, a large majority of Europeans think that if limited efforts to integrate are made by immigrants, it represents a major obstacle. They also recognise that if immigrants face significant difficulties in finding jobs and also experience discrimination and redtape, it makes integration more difficult.

The younger generation, and those with higher levels of education, are more likely to welcome immigrants, see their impact as positive, and more willing to consider integrating them into their lives as friends, colleagues and peers.

European Leaders’ Summit – 22-23/03/2018

Turkey and
Cyprus at the table!

The leaders will also discuss the Salisbury attack and relations with Turkey ahead of the Varna Leader’s meeting.

As a follow up to discussions at their informal meeting on 23 February and in light of the upcoming Leader’s Meeting in Varna on 26 March, the heads of state or government will discuss recent developments in relations with Turkey. They are likely to adopt conclusions which offer solidarity and support to Cyprus in the context of recent tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

President Tusk stated as well on 23 February 2018:
“This evening President Anastasiades and Prime Minister Tsipras informed us about the latest developments regarding Turkey’s illegal violations in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the Aegean. On behalf of all the EU leaders, I would like to express our solidarity with Cyprus and Greece, and urgently call on Turkey to terminate these activities. I reiterate our support for the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to explore and exploit its natural resources, in accordance with EU and international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

These actions contradict Turkey’s commitment to good neighbourly relations and their normalisation with all Member States. We are ready to cooperate with Turkey and will assess at our March European Council whether the conditions are there to hold the Leaders’ Meeting with Turkey in Varna on 26 March.”

EU – Turkey: «Dialogue» but how far!
