Commenting on the coal mine disaster in Soma, Turkey, where over 200 miners are believed to have lost their lives, Bernadette Ségol, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation

“My heart goes out to the miners and their families. They have suffered a devastating loss of life. My thoughts are also with the efforts of the rescue and emergency services to save lives.”

She added “It is a sad fact that Turkey has a poor record of health and safety. This tragedy has brought death and appalling loss to the people of Soma, I can only hope it also brings about a change in attitude towards workers’ health, safety and rights in Turkey.

Tragédie en Turquie

Le Président de la République a appris avec consternation la mort de plus de 200 mineurs après une explosion dans une mine de charbon dans le district de Soma, dans la province de Manisa en Turquie. C’est une tragédie qui suscite une grande émotion.

Il a exprimé au Premier ministre ERDOGAN tout le soutien et la solidarité de la France à l’égard de la Turquie dans cette épreuve.

Il a proposé à la Turquie de mettre à sa disposition toute assistance dont elle aurait besoin pour porter secours aux survivants. Source.

Anne Brasseur addresses her condolences to the Turkish people following the tragedy of Soma

Following the accident that took place in Soma, the Assembly President sent a letter of condolences to the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey:

    Mourning and sympathy for loved ones

    Following the mine disaster in Turkey, Germany too is devastated and mourns the lives lost. The Chancellor has sent her condolences to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones”.

    Aydan Özoğuz, Federal Government Commissioner for Integration, also expressed her sincere sympathy.

    The official death toll following an accident at a mine in western Turkey now stands at almost 300. In a telegram of condolence to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Chancellor Angela Merkel wrote, “I would like to express my deepest sympathy for you and the Turkish people. We hope that those injured will make a speedy recovery to full health”. At this difficult time, Germany stands by Turkey and is ready and willing to help.

    Federal Government Commission for Integration “devastated”

    The Federal Government Commissioner for Integration, Aydan Özoğuz, expressed her devastation in the face of the disaster. “My sincere sympathy goes to the families of the miners. My hopes are with those who are still waiting for their fathers, husbands or brothers to be rescued alive,” she declared in Berlin. A country like Germany, which has a long mining tradition, can truly appreciate the work performed by miners deep under ground. “Many German citizens have family and friends in Turkey.”

    In the wake of the disaster, German flags at the German Embassy and consulates in Turkey are flying at half mast. The homepage of the German Embassy in Ankara reads, “We mourn the miners of Soma. In these difficult hours our thoughts are with their families,. Following Tuesday’s accident the Turkish government announced three days of official mourning. Chancellor Merkel’s Office.

ATAA Mourns Victims of Coal Mine Explosion in Soma, Turkey
Supports Turkish Philanthropy Fund Disaster Relief Effort

The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) mourns the deaths and expresses its sympathies to the families of more than 245 coal miners who were killed in a mining explosion on May 13 in Soma, a district of Turkey’s Aegean province of Manisa.

As emergency teams continue their rescue efforts, our thoughts are also with those workers who were injured or trapped underground.

ATAA supports the Turkish Philanthropy Fund (TPF) Disaster Relief program to help the families of the victims and encourages the Turkish American community give generously to the TPF at http://www.tpfund.org/project/soma-disaster-relief-fund/
